Somchai, a resilient dog, once lived with his pack in a wooded area behind a large school. The schoolmaster, however, did not welcome their presence and had forbidden anyone from feeding them. Yet, one compassionate lady bravely defied this rule, sneaking into the school after hours to provide them with food.
One week, Somchai disappeared, only to reappear in a shocking condition. His left eye was severely infected and bloody, clearly indicating he had been attacked. The kind lady immediately contacted us for help. She rushed him to the vet, who performed an emergency operation to extract the eye. The injury, sustained at least a week prior, was beyond saving. The vet speculated that the damage was consistent with a direct hit from a catapult stone.
For several weeks following the incident, Somchai struggled with swallowing and breathing. We took him to our local vet, who diagnosed a nasal infection and prescribed antibiotics. However, Somchai’s condition did not improve, leading to concerns about potential cancer. Yesterday, he was transported 100 kilometres to our special cases vet for X-rays (a trip that involved an unfortunate incident of him pooping all over the car). Thankfully, the X-rays revealed no shadows of a growth in his nose and no broken bones.
The specialist vet confirmed that Somchai had an infection extending from his nose into his trachea, explaining his difficulty swallowing. Fortunately, the infection had not reached his lungs, which had been another significant concern. Somchai was prescribed medication to combat the infection and prevent mucus buildup. If his condition did not improve within two weeks, further tests would be necessary.
Somchai is now recovering with us. He proved very sensitive to cold and wet weather, which exacerbated his coughing and breathing difficulties. We took great care to ensure he wore his jacket and remained warm and dry. Research suggested that chicken feet were an excellent natural remedy for an infected trachea. Initially, Somchai was not keen on this new diet, but after several months, it definitely improved his breathing problems.
Somchai is a sweet-natured dog who would dearly love a generous sponsor to care about him.
