HOPE

6-9 years

Female

When Hope was rescued she arrived with a high temperature and severe dehydration. We gave her electrolytes and painkillers for a bandaged front leg, which was in terrible pain. After two days of blissful sleep, we realized the leg was too severely broken for us to treat.

We then took Hope on a 200km journey to a large veterinary hospital. X-rays revealed devastating news: her front leg needed to be amputated, leaving her with only one working leg. Her future seemed bleak. The amputation went well, and Hope managed to sit up despite being in plaster support to help realign her spine. This support, however, left her with nasty sores.

Upon discharge, Hope returned to the healing centre, her new forever home. She was still very nervous, painfully thin, and her legs were covered in sores. Despite this, she was a model patient, and her wound healed well, allowing her sutures to be removed a few days later.

Hope is a strong-willed, determined dog. Despite her paralysis, her muscles are well-developed, and her remaining front leg is incredibly strong. Over the years, she's become very independent, loving to hop around on the grass and play with her friends. Her constant movement, however, led to drag and pressure wounds on her back legs, highlighting the need for a solution to keep her mobile: a wheelchair.

After months of waiting, Hope's custom wheelchair finally arrived from the USA. A huge thanks goes to Tom Reiner, Tina Sumner, and Gill Callandar for their generous donations, and to Hope's fantastic sponsor, Matteo Staffaroni in the US, who provided incredible support through the extremely difficult ordering process. It took over three months to get the specialized wheelchair, as "out of the box" requests for a one-legged dog are extraordinary.

We are so proud of Hope! We've been giving her several 5 to 10-minute sessions in her wheelchair, as instructed by Walking Wheels. She's initially nervous when lifted into it, but after a few minutes of reassurance, she relaxes. Hope has had many practice sessions and is slowly becoming mobile without our help. The future now looks very bright for her.

Due to her horrific injuries, Hope often gets nasty infections needing constant medical treatment. She would love more sponsors to care about her and help us give her the best care possible.
